Neither. They're equally valid dialects of the same basic language, and neither resembles its parent languages of middle and old English.

poor pronunciation is due to laziness rather than nationality, eg. people use V instead of TH and miss out middle letters of words. popular heroes such as sportsmen often seem illiterate but set the fashion of poor speech

Brits because its the way the English language is meant to be spoken. American English is full of short cuts such as the word route. English pronounce it "root" where as americans have taken the shortcut rowt. They see the "ou" and figure it must be like the word about.

Plus they have the accent which is an added bonus

Depends on what the word is. But seeing as how England spoke English first, I guess it would be the British.

It isn't an issue of birthright or birthplace

Educated, erudite "Brits" and North Americans enunciate the English language better than those who do not, will not or cannot make the effort.

Obviously the Brits because the Americans speak a completely different language! Of course, most Brits are hopeless on the pronunciation side as well!

In both countries pronunciation depends of economic class and education. As a matter of taste, I find the English used by cockneys and the royal family equally distasteful. I find uneducated American english distasteful, too.

English was invented by the Brits' ancestors. Though, some parts of england have such deep accents they are barely recognizable. Yet, they remain, the authority on english, their own language!

You have at the minimum two different styles of speaking what is essentially the same written language. Neither is better than the other, although Americans often feel that the British style is more pleasing to the ear. I'm not aware that the opposite is felt by the British to any extent.

But the correctness of pronunciation has little or less to do with the different styles than the way the speakers of each style feel about the way their fellow speakers have rendered it.

Brits...the Americans have changed loads of our words and their pronunciation sometimes makes things sound completely different...i.e George Bush's instistence that he is "proud to be a murkin!"...hmmm...quite

Well from my experience I think the British. Thanks to popular culture the English language is going down the drain here in the states. Come on people! Say no to "elite speak" Annunciate!!!

I don't think the English speak their own language properly. It's like they will pronounce the word Military so that it sounds like Militree and Schedule so it sounds like Shed-Yule. Just to name a couple.
