Please, help me figure this out?
I work for an International British school in a South-American country. I was promoted as a LSU(learning support) teaching assistant. When I got this promotion the head o school said I was going to be working with KS1, ESL children . Well, the department head had me working with some ks2 children and that was fine. But now the Head accepted this special needs kid into school who is in year 6, and whose teacher suggested´d be better in year 5(still a high level for him) since he´s working with year 3 maths books. The head of department has the qulifications for SN children but apparently she "can´t" work with him all the time. So she and the head´ve come up with this wonderful idea of making me work only with him all day long, sitting down next to him and supporting in his class as if I were 1 more of the students, 5 days a week. I don´t have neither the qualification nor the experience. And I don´t want to do it bc I don´t like it. Please I´d like your opinion. Am I being unreasonable?

Speaking from experience, although you will be sitting wit this child, you would also be expected to assist others that are in close range to this child. If he is in Year 5 thats not KS1, so you could maybe go back to your line manager and explain that you do not feel that you have the experience to deal with him and to help him to reach his ful potential, or maybe you could offer to do it on a trial basis for a half term, you never know you might enjoy it. Its a wonderful feeling when the child have worked with acheives and you know that a lot of his ability is because you have worked so hard with him.
He might be autistic and would need 1-1 all the time so that his routine does become unsettled.

If you're underqualified, then it doesn't make sense for them to want you on that task in the first place.
All you can do is politely talk to your boss about it.

You're not being unreasonable. Just explain that, at present, you do not feel experienced enough to take on such a role and that you wouldn't actually gain alot out of it career wise. They should respect and admire your honesty, and understand that you will be looking to progress your career, and this is perhaps not the best route for you to take.

Re: Please, help me figure this out?
if you feel unable to help this child you must say to the head. This is their education we're talking about and shouldn't be messed with no matter what their needs are. Is there no chance you could get training for this ? What you are doing is actually a specified job here in Scotland and a very valuable one for the teacher and the child. It can also be very rewarding. Either get a grip for the child's sake or ask the head to find someone else.

If you really think you cannot help the child then you need to speak to your line manager and explain. You could say you are not qualified for such a specialist job. Whether you are being unreasonable doesn't come into it, you cannot help a child if your heart isn't in it.

No, I don't think your being unreasonable. If you haven't spoken to the dept head re; these concerns, I'd consider putting them in a letter that your not qualified and you don't have the experience and will this assignment add to your rating (upgrade teaching assistant status) and how long will this assignment last? Also, keep really good records of your students progress/lack of progress so that you can suggest a better setting for this special needs kid's needs.
