My dissertation topic focuses on 'Exploring the use of music in the EFL/ESL classroom' All the collected information will be kept confidentially. It would be fantastic if you would like to take part in this project, it will only take you 5 minutes to complete! Thank you very much in advance for your support! MUSIC IN THE EFL/ESL classroom
Hi! I think that music should be part of the esl classroom. Do you remember the first song you learned in L2? I'm sure you do remember at least one of the song that you've learn in your L2 classroom (if you had to learn one). Songs are interactive and often funny. That is why you remember it. Why read a text while you can sing it! In elementary grade, it is a good way to motivate your students and have them participate. The one that I remember is Itsy bitsy spider! What a great song! Rain, sun, past tense, spider, with gestures...! And nowadays, what is fun about integrating songs and music is that you can find a planty of them online! On youtube you can get many example of how you can integrate them, of the melody etc...! Try it! Even though you're not a good singer...your students won't notice! =)

Music in classrooms is good idea but you have to pay attention to the level of the students. When I talk of the level, I relate to their age and obviously their level of understanding of the english language. Those are factors that you have to take into consideration. The more I get experience with classes the more I understand that songs are not really relevant for teenagers. They simply think it is too childish and they are simply not motivated. On the other hand, elementary students love it. They all like to sing and dance. This is a good warm-up activity. The kids are not shy since everyone sings along. Well that was my own opinion. Good luck with your master degree.

Music is such an essential tool in the teaching process. Whether it is at elementary or secondary level, music will spice up your classes undoubtedly. My aim as futur English teacher is to incorporate as much as I can the use of music with my students. I am not looking forward to teach at the elementary level so, my selection of songs will be more concrete than basic songs for children. Teenagers love music, which will reach their interests right from the start. Music also vehicles so many messages and values that possible subjects will come up easily and naturally.

(The O.P. will most likely never read this, so I’ll answer to the most recent posts) I agree, music can become an important teaching tool especially with younger students. Simple songs with relevant and authentic vocabulary will greatly help children to learn new words, familiarize with stress patterns, language rhythm and pronunciation. Songs lower anxiety associated with learning a second language as younger children tend to think they’re playing instead of learning. When songs are acted out, learning simply becomes just plain fun for everyone. I would use songs with known melodies or based on familiar “nursery rhymes” so students do not feel overwhelmed.
