whereas, learning any other language only activates the left hemisphere... Does this mean mandarin has some superior quality to it? Does it make people more intelligent for example? Madchris, I'm not aware of the similarities between the languages you mention. Maybe you're right. This statement about mandarin was made on TV by a mandarin teacher.

You think that it is anything to do with the nature of the written language which is ideographic like stylised drawings. I heard that drawing is the other side of the brain from language. How about languages then like Cantonese which is very much like Mandarin and Japanese and Korean which both use the characters borrowed from Chinese.

The authors suggest that it is the tone of the language. Each syllable caries information in both the content and the inflection, unlike western languages, which are monotone. They have not yet tested other tonal languages to suggest this is the case.
Interestingly Michael Merzenich http://www.ucsf.edu/neurosc/faculty/neuro_merzenich.html#publications has shown that putting a child in the room with a mandarin-speaking person for just 90 minutes, increases that child's ability to learn mandarin, or any other language later in life.
